Garden Odds and Ends

This year we are starting our first garden! I come from a long line of expert gardeners in my family but my skills are somewhat non existent (I'm hoping that's just from lack of practice:)

We have a nice deck at our place that gets a LOT of sun so we are hoping our garden will be a success. We're planning on mostly growing edibles (lots of veggies, fruit and herbs) with a few types of flowers for a nice aesthetic.

Our first trip to Garden Works was a shock when I discovered how much those fancy cedar planter boxes cost!! Luckily I have a very handy husband who has made some beautiful planters out of old pallet jacks at his warehouse-throw some stain on them and they look great! We're also going to be checking out craigslist alot(like i need an excuse) if we want to get some nice pots/lattice etc.

So what we've started doing is germinating some seeds indoors to get them started. What we have so far is marjoram, dill, rosemary, chevril and parsley for the herbs, and corn, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers and squash for the veggies:)

They've been germinating for a few days now and just today my zucchini is starting to sprout, how exciting!

I'll update more later with how our garden on the cheap is coming along...with pictures!

Olympics Pictures

Return to Blogland!

Hello Everyone!

Well it seems I'm very slow at this blogging thing....I'm hoping to post more often now!

We had a pretty uneventful January, a lot of lead up to the Olympics for me as I work for RBC (one of the main sponsors). Shawn was also very busy at work as he works in the beer industry and they are definitely in demand right now;)

Now that the Olympics are here it's been pretty incredible! At first I wasn't all that enthused about Vancouver hosting such a big event but now that they're here it's been alot of fun. People are smiling at each other on the streets and just generally being friendlier, it's very different from the Vancouver we're used to! Shawn and I haven't been to any events (can't afford it) but we have gone downtown to check out the scene and just soak everything in. We're hoping to go a few more times before the Games end. I've taken a bunch of pictures and will post them in a few more days.

The Olympics are certainly a great vehicle to showcase our city in it's entirety. I hope that the international coverage shows a clear picture of the poverty, homelessness and drug abuse in our city as much as it shows the beauty here. I truly hope that the legacy of this time will work to improve our city and not just sweep the ugly parts under the rug. I guess time will tell..

Pictures to come!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone!

We haven't posted for a while, been busy with the holidays and have been sick!

Our Christmas was very nice and low key-just how we like it!

I don't have time to write much right now but I wanted to share a blog I recently started following:

Our Family

Our life revolves around our animals so here's some photos of them! We have 2 cats (mom and daughter), Sammy and Jelly (1.5 and 1yr respectively), Tommy our dog, and our lovebird Ms Peeps! They all keep us very busy and are a total joy (most of the time:)
Everyone's enjoying a quiet night at home, it's still raining...!

Monsoon Season

Well it's raining like the world is ending right now. Freezing rain with lots of wind, very dramatic. I love when weather is very emotional and just beats the crap out of Vancouver. As long as there's no major property damage it's fun to see what nature can do to shake up our spoiled city:)

Home now, picked up our new roommate, did a kitten dropoff, cleaned the house (sort of). Time to unplug my brain and eat yummy dinner courtesy of Shawn.

New roommate and I don't know what to do with the Plecostomus(sp?)

Since 2007 Shawn and I have been renting our spare 2 rooms in our townhouse. So far it's been Greg, Henry, Brandon, Peter, Angela, Daniel, and now Jhe.

I would say pretty much all of them have been great, mostly keeping to themselves. Everyone except for Angela and Daniel were students so the max they stayed with us was 6 months.
Throughout the whole process (up until now) the only major damage was when Henry didn't realize that hot cast iron frying pans should not be left on the kitchen counter. The result of this was a huge laminate blister which immediately formed and had to be cut out of the countertop. Shawn didn't like Henry.

Greg was a cute kid from Kelowna who's mom sent us a bottle of wine when he left. Brandon would randomly come and go and sometimes pay the rent. Henry was a sweet, sheltered kid who had no life skills and still calls us for rides occasionally. Peter was an Australian Christian youth minister who travelled the world. Angela is my sister who's previous landlord was a jackass. Daniel is a spoken word artist. Jhe is about to move in.....he's a tattoo artist.

It's definitley stressful renting and living with people. Boundaries are an issue, food/cleanliness/hygiene are an issue. I don't want to live with creepy people but I also do a lot of my posting for tenants on craigslist:P For us the money we make off of the rentals makes it worth it, but there are times that i wish i could just walk around naked again!

Hopefully Jhe will settle in well, and hopefully I can find a home for the Plecostomus my sister left in the room because I keep forgetting to feed it!
